Dope Stories: Ep. 2 - Philip Seymour Hoffman, Heroin Chic, Andy Wood, and James Brown

If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm co-hosting a new podcast with my pal Shane. It's called DOPE STORIES and we're trying to promote a rational discussion about drugs.

The accidental death of Philip Seymour Hoffman by a heroin overdose was the main subject of second episode, with heroin addiction as the looming theme of the show. We played a clip from one of my favorite scenes (the "uncool" phone call) from Almost Famous. Shane discussed what it was like living in NYC in the 1990s at the height of the heroin chic years. I shared a couple of OD stories from the 90s ranging from the infamous ice cube H-train story, how Pearl Jam was formed in the wake the OD of Andy Wood (Mother Love Bone), and the inevitable tragedy of Layne Staley. We ended the show discussing James Brown's P.S.A. to the black community with his song King Heroin.

This is the "setlist" for the second episode...

Monday Morning Key Bumps: Liquid Liquid

This is Cavern by Liquid Liquid. It is not a cover of Phish's version.

This reminds me of the late 80s. Crank it up and get down...

Introducing... The Dope Stories Podcast

Hey kids. I'm Pauly. You might remember me from such podcasts as Coventry's Wook Patrol, Unolker's type II cast, Tao of Pokerati, and Everything Is Bettable.

Well... I'm co-hosting a new podcast called Dope Stories.

My pal Shaniac (poker pro from NYC who lives in LA) approached me at the end of last summer. He had envisioned a new podcast idea, which came to him after a psychedelic adventure (for more info, read Shaniac's take on it.... Dope Stories... I Got A Few). At the same time Shaniac had this epic "moment of clarity", I was on Phish tour and engaging in my own mind-bending adventures. He said I was the perfect person to help him bring his vision to a reality. A podcast about drugs? Sign me up! I jumped on board. Shane tapped his pal DJ Trent to help us produce the podcast. Several months later... it's here.

We launched Dope Stories on Bob Marley's Birthday to commemorate our first episode.

iTunes: COMING SOON!

Our tagline for Dope Stories is... "a rational discussion about drugs and drug use." Dope Stories will be weekly podcast (new episodes every Thursday). Along the way, I'll tell a few stories about the craziness of being on the road and following the Grateful Dead and Phish.

The first episode features a segment on the origins of the Chemdawg strain, which has something to do with Dead summer tour in 1991.

If I had to construct a "setlist" for the first episode of Dope Stories, it might look something like this:

** FYI... iTunes coming soon. Give us another week to get all that sorted out. In the meantime, we're on both Soundcloud and Libsyn.

Bookmark our website: www.dopestories.com and follow us on Twitter @DopeStories.

Stay tuned for a special episode about Philip Seymour Hoffman that will be available early next week, plus we'll also post our third episode next Thursday with subsequent episodes to follow every Thursday.

Monday Morning Key Bumps - Drunk Girls by LCD Soundsystem

Drunk girls... abhorringly wild.

Here's LCD Soundsystem on Jools Holland...

And here's a very disturbing video featuring malevolent pandas. Reminds me of getting stuck in a K-hole...

Free From My Cage - THE mix!

Greetings freaks and geeks of the InterwebzzZZZ.  It's Strawberry Shortcake here!  I can't remember the last time I posted in Coventry, but alas, the spirit has moved me and this is what I got for YOU!

Roughly 3 months ago, my significant other of ~2 years called me and dumped me.

That's right.

On the phone.

That just brings forth a whole new level of "douchery" in my book.

Now, I've been through heartache and break and smashing, drag down, leave you in the trash pain before, as I'm sure you have, too, but no one is ever REALLY prepared to deal with those waves of emotions. With some therapy, friends' shoulders to cry on, uplifting texts and research into his narcissistic ways, I'm coming out on top, yo!

The next phase of my healing process allowed me to create this playlist!  Hot off the press! 40 songs to put a pep in your step, a smile on your face, a fist pump in the air, "GO GODDESSES!" ... maybe a nostalgic thought in your mind. Enjoy!
